Dietitians
Nutrition services
Dietitians are registered health professionals who use their knowledge of food and nutrition to conduct nutritional assessments and provide practical, evidence-based strategies to optimise patients' health.
Dietitians also work closely with our Food Service team to ensure your food is safe and nutritionally adequate during your hospital stay.
The nutrition services team at Tauranga Hospital has specialist dietitians providing services to all wards. They also provide outpatient services for adults and children. Our outpatient clinics are located in Tauranga and Whakatāne. We also hold clinics in Ōpōtiki and Kawerau.
Nutrition support can improve health outcomes for:
- diabetes mellitus
- cardiovascular disease
- neuro-degenerative disorders
- food allergy and intolerance
- gastrointestinal disorders
- malnutrition
- oncology
- specialist feeding regimes e.g. enteral feeding
- post-surgical clients e.g. wound healing
- rehabilitation
- mental health conditions, e.g. eating disorders
- paediatrics.
How to access this service
You will need a referral from your GP or specialist to access our outpatient services. You can access the inpatient service when you are staying in hospital with a referral from a member of the medical team or nurse.
Wait times will vary at our outpatient clinics with urgent appointments seen as soon as possible. Any specific preparation for your appointment will be outlined in your appointment letter.
We do not accept self-referrals without support from a health professional or individual weight loss referral. Patients requiring individual weight loss advice should seek weight loss services in the community. Your GP can refer you to the Primary Health weight reduction service.
