Role of our BOPCTU
The Bay of Plenty Clinical Trials Unit (BOPCTU) is a registered not-for-profit organisation that delivers clinical trial services for Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty.
Based in Tauranga, we have a team of dedicated research nurses and administrative staff that work alongside clinicians at Tauranga Hospital. Our research unit operates to local and international regulations to ensure that all research activity is undertaken to the highest standards.
Clinical trial volunteers
Our aim is to provide access to clinical trials for our community. We are involved in many clinical trials across several medical areas.
We are currently seeking volunteers for:
- Oncology
- Haematology
- Gastroenterology
- Infectious disease / immunology
- ICU/CCU
- Hepatology
- Surgery
- Obstetrics and gynaecology
Each trial has a set of criteria for enrolment. Please ask your doctor if you want to see if there is a clinical trial that is appropriate for you.

The Bay of Plenty Clinical Trials Unit delivers clinical trials services for Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty.
Based in Tauranga we work with clinicians primarily in the secondary care setting of Tauranga Hospital and focus on the delivery of commercially sponsored Phase II-IV trials.

Our facilities and team
Our clinical trials unit is situated across the road from Tauranga Hospital and is staffed by experienced clinical research team. The proximity allows for an easy collaboration between our department and clinicians. Most of our patient services are delivered on the Hospital campus. Our facilities meet regulatory and international standards expected of a clinical trials site.
Our community
We serve one of largest and the fastest growing communities in New Zealand with a population of approximately 240,000 people. Our diverse population is spread across a wide region encompassing both the Eastern and Western Bay of Plenty.
