New remote water meters help to protect the environment

Water is a precious resource that is often taken for granted, but thanks to new remote water meters at Tauranga Hospital, we can now more proactively monitor our water usage.

With the hospital being one of the top water users in Tauranga, the water meters and installation were provided by Tauranga City Council, which replaces and upgrades meters around the city as needed.

“The meters are a powerful tool in our ongoing effort to conserve water resources,” says Sustainability Advisor, Hannah Sherratt who is pictured with Tauranga City Council Water Engineer, Jack Furnish.

The water meters will help us understand hospital water use trends better, allow for quicker leak detection, and identify where to focus our water saving efforts.

Hannah says that over time the data will be used to develop water saving projects.

“One of the main ways to reduce our water use is to report leaking showers, toilets and taps. A dripping tap can waste up to 5,500 litres of water a year - enough to fill a paddling pool every week for the whole summer,” she says.
